Tech giant Google has recently released Giga Manga, an online tool that allows users to create sketches and turn them into manga-inspired art, all with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).
Through Giga Manga, the user can sketch a few simple lines and add some color, then allowing the machine learning to fill in the rest. The user can also draw freeform to personalize their creation further. Once done, the tool will help you discover manga similar to the one the user has drawn.
The recently-launched “Giga Manga” tool is part of Google’s recently launched initiative called Manga Out Of The Box, which aims to take a deeper and comprehensive look into the art form of manga through detailed stories, interactive exhibits and exclusive experiments and videos. The initiative is done in partnership with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, 12 cultural institutions across Japan, and Google Arts & Culture.
Some of the topics that will be discussed include discussions on the history of manga, spotlight on influential figures such as Osamu Tezuka, known for his works such as Astro Boy and Black Jack, as well as closer looks to the contemporary direction of manga creation, including the ongoing project Doraemon x Takashi Murakami, made by contemporary artists Takashi Murakami in celebration of Fujiko F. Fujio’s manga classic.
