In the new volume, Haruhi finds herself in a royal palace, where the king asks her to defeat the evil demon kind. But wait a minute, what is this world? Without understanding anything about this world, Asahina’s magic exploded and we thought our mission was accomplished. But then, Nagato muttered “Mission not accomplished” and we were whisked away to outer space, then to a Western movie, and then to a mythical world. Who in the world is behind this? And Haruhi, what are you thinking this time?
Haruhi Suzumiya light novel series, written by Nagaru Tanigawa and illustrated by Noizi Ito, began publication in 2003. So far, Kadokawa has published 12 volumes; the latest was published in late 2020 after a twelve-year break, Two manga adaptations were also serialized by Kadokawa. The first by Makoto Mizuno, ran from May to December 2004 and its chapters were compiled into one volume. The second manga, titled The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya with art by Gaku Tsugano, was serialized from 2005 to 2013 in Kadokawa’s Comic Ace magazine. It ended after 20 volumes. Yen Press licensed both the light novel and Tsugano’s manga.
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime by Kyoto Animation premiered in 2006. The anime was broadcast in non-chronological order, adapting random stories from the light novel series. The previews for next week’s episodes had both the airing order number and the actual, chronological, episode number while the home video version was ordered properly. The second season was announced in 2007 and wouldn’t air until 2009. The first season was rebroadcasted in April of that year with proper episode order (and DVD release edits). However, the new episodes were mixed in where they fit chronologically. After the finale of the second season, The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie was announced. The movie, which shares the title with the fourth novel of the light novel series, premiered in 2010.
The first four novels have been fully adapted, along with parts of The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Wavering of Haruhi Suzumiya (6). The franchise spawned audio dramas, games, spin-offs, and more. It won multiple Sneaker Awards.
