June 21st marks the birthday of Hinata Shoyo from Haikyuu, and a special trailer was released as the first project to celebrate the manga’s 10-year anniversary in 2022 on the official JUMP COMICS YouTube channel. You can watch the new trailer, though beware of potential manga spoilers:
Haruichi Furudate wrote and drew the original Haikyuu manga, which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2020. It ended with 405 chapters, compiled into 45 volumes. Viz Media licensed it in English, and they describe the story:
After losing his first and last volleyball match against Tobio Kageyama, “the King of the Court,” Shoyo Hinata swears to become his rival after graduating middle school. But what happens when the guy he wants to defeat ends up being his teammate?!
Production I.G produced the anime adaptation. The first season aired in 2014, followed by the sequel which started in the fall of 2015 and finished during the Winter 2016 season. The third season ran for 10 episodes in Fall 2016, covering Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa. Season 4 was titled Haikyuu!! To the Top, and it ran for 25 episodes over two cours – Winter 2020 and Fall 2020. In addition to the TV anime, the franchise also spawned multiple recap movies, OVAs, side stories, stage plays and games.
With the last season having aired almost 2 years ago, fans are happy to see anything new of Hinata Shoyo and Haikyuu. Let’s hope we can see the rest of Karasuno’s matches in the anime format soon!
