Interview: PixelTribe's Terron J. and Ilsun on Goddess Order

Anime Corner recently chatted with PixelTribe’s Contents Director Terron J. and Art Director Ilsun on the upcoming Goddess Order mobile game. The do gave us a deep dive into the motivation behind making the game and took the time to explain the plot, art style, gameplay, and more, in detail.

Q: Could you tell us more about the game – the plot, the genre, how it came to be?

Terron J.: Hey there! I’m Terron J., the Contents Director at PixelTribe working on Goddess Order. Goddess Order is a mobile action RPG in development, led by the core team behind Crusaders Quest, which gained acclaim for its pixel graphics. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to introduce our game like this.

Goddess Order reflects our studio’s core philosophy of deep affection for our key characters and innovative use of pixel graphics. The development of Goddess Order began with three central characters: Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan. Our entire world-building and the RPG genre were designed to highlight the unique appeal of these characters.

Our previous game, Crusaders Quest, was praised for its unique combat style using pixel graphics. Building on that success, we aimed to implement action through pixel art in Goddess Order, solidifying it as a full-fledged action RPG.

We focused heavily on the control elements, ensuring that players can fully experience the characters’ individuality, new combat styles, and detailed graphics. We want players to feel immersed in the world and battles of Goddess Order, providing a tactile and vivid gaming experience. Our goal is to create a game where players can deeply engage with the world and its combat dynamics.

Q: Why “Goddess Order”? Were there any other titles you guys came up with, or was the game supposed to be called “Goddess Order” from the beginning?

Terron J.: First, let me explain the name of the game and its central object, the “Goddess Order,” which is integral to the entire experience.

The “Goddess Order” is a prophetic book bestowed upon humanity by a goddess. It contains prophecies about the future and advanced technologies, making it a powerful object that can alter the course of history depending on who possesses it at any given time. This powerful artifact, central to the plot of saving the world, is why the game is named “Goddess Order.” The term “Order” carries a dual meaning: it signifies the will or command of the goddess and also refers to the “knighthood” that responds to her call.

Q: Is there a specific reason as to why you guys went with the fantasy setting?

Terron J.: Thank you for showing such interest in the world of Goddess Order. The game follows the adventure of Lisbeth, the princess of the Kingdom of Kaplan, who discovers the impending end of the world. Determined to save humanity, she forms a knighthood to collect the scattered fragments of the Goddess Order.

When we were crafting the scenario, we felt that the characters had the essence of rulers in a fantasy world. We were confident that we could write their journey as an uplifting chronicle, which led us to set the world in a medieval fantasy era. However, to ensure the story doesn’t follow a monotonous plot, we adopted a principle that ‘anything can appear in medieval fantasy.’ This means that modern weapons and devices can also make their appearance within the story.

The games that thrilled us the most often featured strong bonds between protagonists and their allies, narratives where compassion and forgiveness emerged even in the face of enemies. In Goddess Order, we are committed to creating a fantasy world that is not only whimsical but also capable of touching hearts with its story. While the overall narrative will depict confrontations between allies and enemies, we strive to weave unique stories that make every character memorable. Our goal is to create a game that feels like a “hymn to humanity,” where players can feel affection for all characters, both friend and foe, through their distinct narratives.

Q: The game looks beautiful, did you want to make the game in pixel art or were other art styles also considered?

Ilsun: Hello, I’m Ilsun, the Art Director at PixelTribe, overseeing the graphics for Goddess Order. As mentioned earlier, Goddess Order began with the creation of three pixel characters: Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan. Because of this, we never considered any other art style.

I’d like to highlight that Goddess Order features refined pixel art, combining intricate character designs with storybook-style backgrounds to create a sophisticated visual experience. This showcases our unique expertise in pixel graphics, which is a source of pride for us and the reason behind naming our studio PixelTribe. Receiving positive feedback on our art style has been one of our most desired outcomes, and it feels great to hear it.

Q: Judging from the trailer, it seems it won’t be a turn-based game, is that correct?

Terron J.: Yes, Goddess Order features action combat that emphasizes direct control to deliver a satisfying combat experience. Beyond using basic skills, players can engage in defense, parrying, breaking, and object manipulation to create a dynamic combat cycle.

Although we emphasize action, we designed the combat to be accessible for players who are attracted to our pixel art but may not be familiar with action games. The overall mechanics are easy to grasp, but we have included various elements that allow those who master the combat system to enjoy peak action performance. We want Goddess Order to be enjoyable for both newcomers to action games and seasoned players who appreciate nuanced combat. I’ll explain more about our combat system in the next question.

Q: The trailer showcases a lot of unique bosses, will every one of them have unique mechanics?

Terron J.: As I mentioned earlier, we’re developing a variety of content that lets players experience extreme action. The pinnacle of combat in Goddess Order lies in the boss battles. Each boss features unique mechanics and strategies, offering a rewarding challenge. We’re focusing on creating a pure sense of gaming joy that comes from overcoming these challenges and cleverly using or countering the bosses’ gimmicks. It’s a tough task, but I believe our team is doing a fantastic job.

Q: How many characters, besides Jan, Violet, and Lisbeth, will players get to play?

Ilsun: Currently, our global teaser site features Lisbeth, Violet, and Jan. In the actual game, players will encounter a variety of characters through the story. We’re working hard to ensure that most of these characters will be playable, with around 20 characters in development. Each character has a unique narrative and combat style, allowing players to explore different actions and strategies. We’re preparing a diverse range of approaches to keep the gameplay exciting and engaging.

Let me introduce Luna, a character that our studio holds in high regard. Luna is a brilliant ice mage with a laid-back and easygoing personality, sometimes even a bit goofy. However, once in battle, she becomes incredibly serious and dependable, like a fierce older sister. Luna has a special encounter with Lisbet and her knights during a significant event in the game. Known for her powerful area-of-effect spells, Luna’s original story is also prepared for players to enjoy in the game. We plan to showcase a variety of characters with unique charms through continuous updates, so please stay tuned and look forward to what’s coming!

Q: Will players get to swap between playable characters actively? Or will they get to control only one main character during battle?

Terron J.: One of the core aspects of combat in Goddess Order is the ‘synergy between characters.’ Typically, players will control three characters in a tag battle format, switching them out one at a time. When certain conditions are met, the character leaving the field will stay briefly to assist the incoming character. Additionally, when all three characters are on the battlefield simultaneously, they can unleash even more powerful skills under special conditions. The key to battle management lies in actively switching characters at the right moments to develop your own strategies and considering the synergy between characters to decide the optimal timing and order of switches.

Q: Will the game be available on PC and consoles, or will it be a mobile-only title?

Ilsun: We’re currently focusing on a mobile release. One of the key aspects we’ve worked on is ensuring that both the combat and animations are technically optimized for mobile devices. We’re making sure that the game runs smoothly even on standard mobile hardware, so that battles aren’t interrupted and cutscenes remain immersive. Since Goddess Order emphasizes direct control and experiencing each character’s unique combat style, we’re committed to ensuring that external factors don’t hinder the gameplay experience.

However, our goal is to ensure the game runs smoothly even in minimal environments, so we’re also positively considering a future PC version. While we can’t confirm the exact platforms we’ll be offering right now, we are carefully evaluating user convenience and plan to provide the best possible experience after a thorough internal review.

Q: Is there something you would like to tell all the fans waiting for the game’s release?

Ilsun, Terron.J: The pixel art graphics and the narrative-driven story of Goddess Order evoke the charm of a well-made JRPG. We know that fans of Crusaders Quest are excited about Goddess Order and are eagerly anticipating its release. That’s why we wanted to share more information about the game through this interview. We’re working hard to deliver a polished experience, so please bear with us a little longer.

With beautiful visuals created using 2D-pixel art, Goddess Order offers a strategic combat style and an emotional, classical story. We aim to provide a new and familiar experience, blending strategy and narrative in a unique way. We appreciate your patience and hope you look forward to what we have in store.
