Kodansha, Japan’s largest publisher and the source of popular manga properties including Akira, Sailor Moon, Attack on Titan, and Blue Lock, is bringing a manga pop-up to NYC’s SoHo this October. Kodansha House: Where Manga Meets will open on October 4 in SoHo located at 45 Grand Street, open from Wednesdays to Sundays, 12pm-9pm, running through the month of October.
The event will feature a giant manga shelf-shaped entry that leads into a space featuring a manga library, gallery, cafe, and a variety of interactive exhibits and workshops. Kodansha describes the space as “a vibrant meeting place where the world of manga comes alive” and the month of programming features live discussions, a trivia night, movie screenings, and rare US appearances from Kodansha manga creators. Movie screenings will feature anime classics and recent favorites like Akira, Blue Lock, Ghost in the Shell, and Blame!. Manga creators Shuzo Oshimi (The Flowers of Evil), Tsubasa Yamaguchi (Blue Period), Makoto Yukimura (Vinland Saga), and Kamome Shirahama (Witch Hat Atelier) will be in attendance with their appearances including Q&A sessions as well as signings. Reservations for these sessions open on September 10th.
Two of the featured activations at Kodansha House include the Akira Slide Photobooth, where fans can don Kaneda’s iconic jacket and goggles and pose against a projected anime background with a stationary Akira bike, and Titan’s Fury – Attack on Titan Photobooth, where fans can experience a life size model of the Attack on Titan walled village and act out scenes as titans.
