Lakan's Past Is Revealed in The Apothecary Diaries Episode 23 Preview

The preview images and trailer for The Apothecary Diaries episode 23 titled “Balsam and Woodsorrel” are now out. After completing the blue roses, Maomao challenges her father, the tactician Lakan, to a game of elephant chess. If Lakan wins, Maomao must become his daughter; but if Maomao wins, Lakan must redeem a courtesan. Jinshi and Gaoshun can only watch in suspense as Maomao strategizes using alcohol laced with “poison.”

Later, Lakan loses in a game of wits and wakes up at the Verdigris House. But will any of the flowers there catch his eye when his heart is in love with a memory? Lakan’s history with the Verdigris House is finally revealed.

The episode will air on Saturday, March 16, at 24:55 JST, while the English subtitled versions come out an hour later. See the preview images below:

The Apothecary Diaries is a Japanese light novel series written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Toko Shino. Shunfunotomo’s Hero Bunko currently publishes the light novel series, J-Novel Club publishes the digital English version, and Square Enix publishes the novels in print.

The series also has two manga adaptations: the manga series of the same name by Itsuki Nanao, illustrated by Nekokurage on Square Enix’s Monthly Big Gangan; and “Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Maomao no Kokyu Nazotoki Techo (The Apothecary Diaries: The Palace Cloister Mystery-Solving Notebook of Maomao)” by Minoji Kurata on Shogakukan’s Monthly Sunday Gene-X.

TOHO Animation and OML are currently animating The Apothecary Diaries series, which is set to have a total of 24 episodes. It is is available on Netflix and Crunchyroll in select regions. Crunchyroll describes the plot:
Maomao lived a peaceful life with her apothecary father. Until one day, she’s sold as a lowly servant to the emperor’s palace. But she wasn’t meant for a compliant life among royalty. So when imperial heirs fall ill, she decides to step in and find a cure! This catches the eye of Jinshi, a handsome palace official who promotes her. Now, she’s making a name for herself solving medical mysteries!
