The Failure at God School supernatural shojo manga by Natsu Hyuga (The Apothecary Diaries creator) and Modomu Akagawara is officially getting a TV anime adaptation.
The story takes place in modern Japan, where people with supernatural abilities can qualify to serve as gods at shrines. It follows Nagi, a girl who believes she has no powers of her own. After she uses a technique developed to block her telepathic twin brother to fend off an attack, she discovers that she possesses supernatural abilities and is enrolled in a school that trains future gods.
The two creators commented:
Natsu Hyuga (story):
“The Failure at God School is getting an anime adaptation. We’ll get to see and hear Nagi, Takeru, Tsukuyomi and Tota move and speak. What a wonderful thing. It’s all thanks to everyone involved in making the series and to its readers. To my past self, who started writing after an editor told me, ‘It’s for Hana to Yume, and Akagawara-sensei will be drawing the manga’: It’s getting an anime! I suppose all I can do now is keep writing the story and pray to the gods. Thank you for your support.”
Modomu Akagawara (art):
“Thank you for the TV anime adaptation of The Failure at God School! As the manga artist in charge of the comic version, I couldn’t be happier. I’m filled with gratitude toward original author Natsu Hyuga, our editors, the anime production team, everyone who has helped us, and all the readers who have supported the series. I’m also looking forward to seeing the characters of the school for gods come to life and speak, as a viewer myself!”
A teaser visual was also revealed:
The Failure at God School began serialization in Hakusensha’s Hana to Yume magazine in August 2021. Yen Press publishes the manga in English, describing the story of Volume 1:
Nagi’s normal! Gods are supposed to give girls like her divine aid, not invitations to the most prestigious magic academy in Japan!! Modern life means modern solutions, even to supernatural problems. So of course the government would have a classification system, special schools, and licenses for people with mysterious powers—any manifestation of a miracle is enough to be called a Himiko, but only those with full certification may use the title of God. And high schooler Nagi is in serious need of a god! The death of her grandmother has left her family shrine devoid of the necessary divinity, and her hopelessly shut-in Himiko brother doesn’t look promising. But if Nagi isn’t careful, her search for a god might end with her finding more than she bargained for…
The Apothecary Diaries has numerous upcoming projects, including Season 3 of the TV anime, an anime film, the first console game, and a live-action series.
