The previously announced Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim anime movie is set for April 12, 2024 release, Variety reports. The movie, which will be animated by Sola Digital Arts and directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex), is set 250 years before the events of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. An exclusive first-look teaser (image below) has also been revealed. Warner Bros. Pictures is producing the movie.
Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim follows the story of Helm Hammerhand, a legendary King of Rohan. Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou are writing the script. Screenwriter Philippa Boyens, who worked on the original movie trilogy, is consulting. Sola Digital Arts recently animated the Blade Runner: Black Lotus series, which is also based on a literary classic.
The War of the Rohirrim movie is not related to Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series, which is set to release in September of this year.
Variety also reports that the announcement came at a time when the studio is in a dispute with the Saul Zaentz Co., the longtime owner of LOTR film and TV rights, over whether Warner Bros. has done enough development on the franchise to maintain its hold on live-action and animated film rights.
