The Made in Abyss anime confirmed its previously announced sequel to be a theatrical film series, with the first movie installment scheduled to premiere in 2026. It’s titled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun – The Awakened Enigma (not official translation, the words are “Mezameru Shinpi” / 目覚める神秘). The announcement was made alongside the release of a new teaser visual and coincides with the launch of Volume 14 of the manga.

The visual features two new characters, Tepaste and Cravagli, shown at the Tumble Tavern.

The new film will serve as a direct continuation of the 2022 TV anime Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun. Kinema Citrus returns as the animation studio, continuing its involvement from the previous entries in the series. The staff includes:

  • Director: Masayuki Kojima
  • Screenplay: Hideyuki Kurata
  • Character Design: Yuka Kuroda, Kazuchika Kise (Production I.G)
  • Animation Production: Kinema Citrus

The confirmed voice cast includes:

  • Miyu Tomita as Riko
  • Mariya Ise as Reg
  • Shiori Izawa as Nanachi
  • Misaki Kuno as Faputa

Made in Abyss, written and illustrated by Akihito Tsukushi, follows the descent of a girl named Riko and a robot boy named Reg into the Abyss, a massive pit filled with ancient relics and mysterious creatures. The manga is serialized on Takeshobo’s Web Comic Gamma and has over 22 million circulating copies.

A film concert titled Made in Abyss Film Concert: Deep Echoes of Resonance will also be held on February 8, 2026 at Tokyo’s Nakano ZERO Grand Hall. Composer Kevin Penkin will conduct a live orchestra performing the anime’s soundtrack, accompanied by anime footage on a large screen. Vocalist Ko Saito and KIHOW (MYTH & ROID), who performed the series’ theme songs, will appear for live performances. Main cast members Miyu Tomita (Riko), Mariya Ise (Reg), and Shiori Izawa (Nanachi) will also appear.

In addition, a Bondrewd-themed pop-up store and fragrance collaboration are in development.
