Columbia Pictures Philippines has announced that the SCARLET movie, animated by Studio Chizu and directed by Mamoru Hosoda, will premiere in the Philippines on December 10, 2025. It will exclusively be available in SM Cinemas nationwide. Tickets are available to purchase via the SM Cinema app and at physical SM Cinema ticket booths.
Scarlet (Japanese title: Hateshi naki Scarlet, meaning “Scarlet Without Limits”) previously opened in Japan on November 21, while the United States will have it on December 12. The movie stars Scarlet, a “strong princess who transcends time and space,” as its main character.
The official Sony Pictures website describes the movie:
From visionary Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda (MIRAI) comes a powerful, time-bending animated adventure about SCARLET, a medieval-era, sword-fighting princess on a dangerous quest to avenge the death of her father. After failing at her mission and finding herself gravely injured in the “Otherworld,” she encounters an idealistic young man from our present day who not only helps her to heal but shows her the possibility of a future free of bitterness and rage. When confronted again by her father’s killer, Scarlet faces her most daunting battle: can she break the cycle of hatred and find meaning in life beyond revenge?
Known for movies like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006), Summer Wars (2009), and Belle (2021), Hosoda is once again taking on the roles of director, screenwriter, and original creator. As previously revealed, Hosoda described the Scarlet film as inspired by a well-known classic, following a trend seen in his previous work, Belle, which re-imagined Beauty and the Beast in a modern, internet-driven setting.
The movie also includes a second key character and will focus on the journey of the two contrasting characters who deepen their bond through shared experiences. The movie incorporates elements of a “road movie” and a “buddy story.” Lastly, Mamoru Hosoda teased that Scarlet is neither a 2D animation nor Hollywood-style CG, and that he and Studio Chizu are creating a fresh and distinctive visual style.
