The results of the 2025 Anime Awards are now all out, and Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 was voted as the best girl. With over 24,000 people voting, Maomao beat out Kaoruko Waguri from The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity and Yor Forger from SPY x FAMILY Season 3, among all the other nominees. This wasn’t the only awards for The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 for the past year. Loulan (Shisui) was voted as the Best Female Supporting Character, with “Hyakka Ryoran” by Lilas Ikuta taking home the Best Opening award. The anime ranked 3rd overall, also taking Best Drama and Best Storytelling. You can check the full AOTY ranking.
Natsu Hyuga writes the The Apothecary Diaries light novel, with illustrations by Toko Shino. The series is serialized by Shunfunotomo. The series has 2 manga adaptations, one written by Itsuki Nanao and illustrated by Nekokurage, and one written and illustrated by Minoji Kurata.
J-Novel Club is publishing the novel in English, while Squre Enix is publishing the manga. The story follows Maomao, a young apothecary who ends up getting sold to the emperor’s palace as a lowly servant. She’s not the type of character who can just stay obedient, so she ends up helping Jinshi, the handsome official at the palace.
The anime adaptation is set to mark both 2026 and 2027 with Season 3 and an original new movie.
