The anime adaptation of Baku Yumemakura’s Onmyoji series revealed the main cast lineup, alongside a November 28 release date. Netflix will be streaming the anime exclusively. The cast for the Onmyoji anime include:
- Daisuke Namikawa as Abe Seimei
- Shintaro Asanuma as Minamoto Hiromasa
- Yui Ishikawa as Tsuyuko
- Kenji Hamada as Imperial Prince Atsumi
- Daisuke Kishio as Kamo Yasunori
- Rina Sato as Ashiya Doman
The Onmyoji anime was first announced at the Netflix TUDUM 2022 event, with studio Marvy Jack (Spice and Wolf Season 2, Koiken!: Watashitachi Anime ni Nacchatta!) animating it. Soubi Yamamoto is the director for the series, with Natsu Hashimoto and Yuiko Kato are in charge of the scripts.
Baku Yumemakura has been writing the Onmyoji novel series since September 1986. The series of novels, published by Bungeishunju, follows an onmyoji named Abe no Seimei, who is a master of onmyodo, a traditional Japanese form of cosmology.
The novel series sprang a manga adaptation by Reiko Okano, which was serialized from 1993 to 2005. A sequel, titled Onmyoji: Tamatebako, also by Okano was serialized from 2010 to 2017. Another manga titled Onmyoji: Taki Yashahime was written by Munku Mitsuki and was serialized from 2012 to 2015.
Onmyoji received various live-action adaptions over the years: a 2001 Japanese television drama adaptation, two live-action films directed by Yojiro Takita in 2001 and 2003, and two separate films broadcast on Japanese television in 2015 and 2020. A Chinese live-action film adaptation titled The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity from 2020 also exists: it was directed by Guo Jingming.
