Oshi no Ko manga creator Aka Akasaka appeared at a talk event where he talked about his heavy involvement in the anime series. Yorozoo News reported that regarding the animation process, Akasaka said, “I want to be involved in everything,” adding that he participates in the weekly voice acting process, making requests of the actors to change certain lines: “It’s pretty easy to express my requests and opinions.”
Akasaka also reflected on his ‘surprising calm’ when he learned he was receiving his first anime adaptation with Kaguya-sama: Love is War. He described it as: “a feeling of excitement gradually building up,” adding, “I can smile for a very long time. I’m 100% happy.” Regarding the challenges of live-action adaptations, Akasaka refused to be drawn out, reportedly answering with a wry smile, “In this day and age, I’d better not do that.”
Following the unfortunate passing of the manga author Hinako Ashihara, many in the industry opened up about the experience of trying to protect the integrity of their work during an adaptation. This naturally proved to be a charged conversation, with notable figures like Hajime no Ippo creator George Morikawa speaking out (Sponichi News) and then facing abuse on social media.
It’s perhaps even more difficult for Akasaka to speak on the matter given that Oshi no Ko is also receiving two live-action adaptations. While he’s involved in both the anime and live-action, Oshi no Ko artist Mengo Yokoyari is unable to due to prior commitments. The live-action is a joint production between Amazon and Toei and will be released this winter.
The Oshi no Ko anime series is animated by Dogo Kobo and will return for a second season this year.
