Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise is getting an anime movie adaptation, with December 5, 2025 set for the premiere date in Japan. Studios Shin-ei Animation and Fugaku are in charge of the animation, while Toei will handle the distribituion.
Goro Kuji (Chained Soldier Season 1) is directing the movie, with the original manga author Kazuyoshi Takeda working on the script together with Junji Nishimura. You can watch the first teaser trailer below.
The movie adaptation will release on the 80th anniversary of the second World War, which ended in September 1945. The story is based on the historical Battle of Peleliu which took place during World War II. It is set on Peleliu Island, an important battleground during the Pacific War. It shows the struggles of young Japanese soldiers sent to the island, where out of 10,000 troops, only 34 survived. You can see the teaser visual below.
Kazuyoshi Takeda began the Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise (Periryu -Rakuen no Gerunika-) manga in 2016. It was serialized in Hakusensha’s Young Animal magazine from February 2016 to April 2021, releasing a total of 11 volumes. A spin-off manga titled Peleliu Gaiden began serialization in the same magazine in July 2021 and is set to end with the fourth volume this July. Takeda commented on the anime adaptation:
I have been deeply involved in the production of the film, serving as a supervisor and co-writer of the screenplay alongside Junji Nishimura. The process of completing the script took an incredibly long time.
The original manga spans 11 volumes, excluding spin-offs, so the challenge was figuring out how to adapt it into a film. A superficial digest-style adaptation would be unfulfilling, both for me as the creator and for the fans.
While one option was to focus solely on the first half of the story and adapt it thoroughly, this approach felt lacking narratively. Additionally, the story is rooted in historical events—the war from 80 years ago and the people who lived through it.
After much thought, I am confident that the screenplay for the film version of Peleliu will satisfy fans of the original work. I am eagerly looking forward to seeing Tamaru, Yoshishiki, and the rest of the beloved characters come to life on the big screen.
The anime film Peleliu: Guernica of Paradise will premiere on December 5, 2025. Please stay tuned for more updates.
