Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising confirmed the winter 2025 release date with a short teaser trailer at today’s Aniplex Online Fest. The movie, initially slated to premiere in 2024, was pushed to 2025 to further improve the quality.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica, an original anime project created by the Magica Quartet (Akiyuki Shinbo, Ume Aoki, Gen Urobuchi, and producer Atsuhiro Iwakami), premiered in January 2011 as a TV anime. It ran until April of the same year and had a total of 12 episodes (the broadcast of the final two episodes was delayed due to the Great East Japan Earthquake).
Although the anime project wrapped up the story, the series also spawned multiple manga series (adaptations and spin-offs), a novel by Nitroplus, a dedicated magazine, and video games. Two recap movies were released in October of 2012. They were followed by a third movie, titled Rebellion, which premiered in October 2013 and featured a new story – a continuation of the TV anime. The movie is a prequel to Walpurgisnacht. All three of these movies are getting an Ulltra HD Blu-ray release on January 29.
It’s worth noting that the Magia Record spin-off story spawned an anime adaptation (also by studio SHAFT) and a mobile game. The upcoming game, Puella Magi Madoka Magica Magia Exedra, also revealed a character trailer for Ashley Taylor:
