Review: Anyway, I'm Falling in Love With You Episode 1

Anyway, I’m Falling in Love With You anime adaptation is airing this season and it’s probably the first title we’ve had that indirectly mentions the COVID-19 pandemic. The plot is set in 2020 where 17 year-old Mizuho is living the best of her high school life, surrounded by four of her male friends.

I had the opportunity to watch the first episode of this adaptation but I admit I didn’t check out the manga. For the most part, Anyway, I’m Falling in Love With You premiere episode felt rushed. The pandemic references are there but they feel all over the place: one moment the swim team is being let out early while the next there are gatherings and meet-ups. Perhaps the story wasn’t told in chronological order, but there was no indication to prove otherwise.

As the story actually starts with grown-up Mizuho, now a mangaka who remembers her high school days and first love I expected the time skip to be somewhat greater. As it stands now, four years later it feels like she’s at least 10 years older. A saving grace for the plot would be to turn this episode into a flashback that ties into the current-day events, but judging by the volume descriptions it’s more likely that we are looking at a love hexagon of sorts.

The adaptation will appeal to lovers of shojo manga art style, especially when it comes to character designs. Sadly, visually Anyway, I’m Falling in Love With You fails to hit the mark. Nothing particularly stands out and movements are unremarkable.

The anime is streaming on Crunchyroll from January 9. You can also vote for it in Anime Corner polls.
