Solo Leveling Producer Says He’d Like To Wait Until 2028 for Season 3 Prospects, but Says It’s More up to A-1 Pictures

At a recent media Q&A event hosted by TheWrap’s Raquel Harris, Aniplex producer Sota Furuhashi and A-1 Pictures animation producer Atsushi Kaneko were asked if they could share anything about Solo Leveling Season 3. Sung Jinwoo’s voice actor, Aleks Le, chimed in, adding that he would also like to know, when Furuhashi added (via Mama’s Geeky YouTube channel):

I think that’s the toughest question I’ve had tonight. I think more than anyone, I am anxiously awaiting a Season 3! But in truth, between Season 1 and Season 2, 220,000 frames of animation were created,” he said, attracting surprise from the audience. “And of course, I’d love to give the animators a little breathing room. So, if it were up to me, I’d say let’s wait until the next Olympics to see what’s going to happen with a Season 3. But to get to that 220,001st frame of animation, I think that’s up to more up to Kaneko-san and A-1 Pictures.” It’s worth noting that in a recent Reddit AMA, it was revealed that a Solo Leveling episode took around 10 months on average to complete, with the longer ones taking 12 months.

Furuhashi’s attempt to shift the responsibility to Kaneko attracted a playful, “No, no, no! So, it’s on me now, then!?” After a pause and several attempts to choose the correct words, Kaneko replied, “Um… This is difficult. Let me just start by saying, I, too, want to see what happens next.

And this isn’t necessarily a complex of mine, so to speak, but I’ve worked my entire career on this island country, Japan, and it was Solo Leveling that really brought this international perspective and viewpoint to me. And every time I go to a different country, there’s this sort of stimulation from the audience, from the fans… The energy. And it makes me realize how different all the countries and fandoms are around the world. And it really reminds me of the power of entertainment.

Solo Leveling Producer on Season 3: The Power of Solo Leveling Fans Will Determine Whether There’s a Season 3

Take any medium: manga, anime, video games, movies, I think I’m experiencing the power of entertainment firsthand right now. So this was one of my responses to a press interview I had earlier today– But I just want to see how many of you in the audience know an anime called Dragon Ball.

I want to say — of course, I had nothing to do with Dragon Ball or Akira Toriyama‘s work — but in spite of that, I think the power that his entertainment commanded around the world, transcending borders, transcending languages, transcending cultures, looking at the global phenomena he was able to create, again, goes back to the power of entertainment. And there’s one move that Goku has that I want to highlight now, and it’s not the Kamehameha, which I think a lot of you are thinking about. It’s actually the Spirit Bomb.

During the translation of his answer, Kaneko raised his arms multiple times to symbolize the Spirit Bomb. “And I am going somewhere with this — The Spirit Bomb,” he continued. “It’s not up to Takahashi-san, or me, or Furuhashi-san. You guys know how the Spirit Bomb works. You get power from all of the Solo Leveling fans out there, and that is going to determine if there will be a season 3 or not. The Spirit Bomb.

Furuhashi and Kaneko recently answered questions on the prospects of Solo Leveling Season 3 via Reddit, where they also used the Spirit Bomb analogy. Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini’s answer on Season 3 may support Furuhashi’s answer that it’s more down to A-1 Pictures’ schedule, explaining, “The [series] creators want to work on a lot of shows. Anime is really popular, so there’s a lot of demand, and so we have to find the right time to get started on the next season.

The Q&A also saw Crunchyroll’s Kanako Takahashi answer questions about the process of globalizing the series, including the decision to have two Japanese dubs — using Japanese and the original Korean names. Furuhashi and Kaneko chimed in on that; both said it was a challenge, and the staff showed initial resistance due to the extra workload. The Q&A included Aleks Le revealing how Furuhashi accidentally spoiled that he was cast as Sung Jinwoo, Michelle Rojas exploring the importance and experience of playing Cha Hae-in, and much more.
