The manga had over two million in circulation in March and has since seen an influx in demand, likely due to the anime adaptation which premiered this month. It began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2021 and has released 162 chapters and 16 volumes. VIZ Media licenses the ongoing series in English and has published the first 11 volumes. The author, Yusei Matsui, is also known for the Assassination Classroom series.
The Elusive Samurai has graced the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump eight times since its debut, along with 24 color pages and seven color spreads. The manga won the 69th Shogakukan Manga Award earlier this year alongside titles such as Frieren Beyond Journey’s End by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, Trillion Game by Riichirou Inagaki and Ryoichi Ikegami, and Suji de Asobo by Murako Kinuta.
The anime is currently airing with CloverWorks handling the animation production. Crunchyroll is streaming it with English subtitles.
VIZ Media describes the story as:
After the massacre of his family by the traitor Ashikaga Takauji, Tokiyuki flees with the help of a handful of loyal retainers who have also survived the purge. One of them is Suwa Yorishige, an ally of the Hojo clan and lord of Suwa Province. The slightly odd Yorishige also claims to be clairvoyant and foretells that Tokiyuki will one day become the ruler of Japan. But for the moment, escaping from enemy territory is the priority!
