The Kept Man of the Princess Knight anime has revealed its first teaser trailer and visual, along with a January 2027 release date. The anime was announced in February 2025.
As previously announced, Junichi Suwabe will voice Matthew, while Mikako Komatsu stars as Arwin, the Crimson Princess Knight. The two can be heard in the teaser trailer.
Originally the Grand Prize winner of the 28th Dengeki Novel Awards, The Kept Man of the Princess Knight is a Japanese light novel series written by Toru Shirogane and illustrated by Saki Mashima. The series began publication under ASCII Media Works’ Dengeki Bunko imprint on February 10, 2022, and has released six volumes as of May 2025. Volume 6 is set to release on July 10.
There is also a manga adaptation by Keyyang, began serialization on Kadokawa’s ComicWalker manga website in September 2022. It got three volumes after which a sequel by Chihiro Yamazaki titled The Kept Man of the Princess Knight Act2 began on August 31, 2025.
The story follows Arwin, a noble princess knight determined to restore her fallen homeland by conquering the labyrinth. By her side is Matthew, a man widely mocked as a freeloader who lives off Arwin’s earnings, avoids dungeon exploration, and spends his days drinking and chasing women. Despite his reputation, the pair share a secret that no one else knows, with the story exploring whether their unusual relationship will lead to hope or tragedy.
