Someone at Chara Syrup U Products needs the raise of the decade for giving us the Maomao cola syrup! A masterclass in true-to-plot branding, the Maomao cola syrup is touted as a medicinal cola consisting of various herbs and spices and pays homage to cola’s medicinal roots.
The product’s pre-order period starts this coming Friday, June 13, and runs until Monday, June 23. A 6.7 oz (200 ml) bottle will retail for ¥2980 (~$20). Shipping is expected to start in early July.
The Maomao Cola Syrup’s Deets
Have you ever looked at a new-age hippie or a homeopathy loon and thought, “I wish I could make them spasm about something?” If you have, you’re in luck—because that’s exactly what the Maomao cola syrup is designed to do. With ingredients like ginger, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, hibiscus, chili peppers, ginseng, and vegetable sugar, this drink is a natural remedy lover’s dream.
The Maomao cola syrup boasts the comforting smell of sanzashi (Crataegus cuneata) and jasmine (Jasminum sp.) and is infused with wildflower honey. You can dilute the cola syrup up to five times, and Chara Syrup U Products encourages you to mix it with milk or carbonated water.
The medicinal-styled bottle’s branding features a minimalist portrait of Maomao, and I can guarantee you, she approves!
So, Who’s Maomao?
The star of Natsu Hyuuga’s The Apothecary Diaries, Maomao is the anime version of El Chapo Guzmán—a waifu obsessed with drugs.
Raised by an apothecary, Maomao’s interest and knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine become invaluable when she is kidnapped and sold to the Imperial Palace’s Inner Court. There her macabre fascination with medicine helps her solve a myriad of problems. Unfortunately for her, those skills make the Inner Court’s manager, the frog-man Jinshi, take an interest in her. But, his interest in her places her deeper into the Inner Court’s convoluted politics.
Crunchyroll simulcasts The Apothecary Diaries. The anime adapts Natsu Hyuuga’s (illustrations by Touko Shino) light novel.
