Though I Am an Inept Villainess anime unveiled a new trailer and four additional cast members on Thursday. The anime is slated to premiere in July 2026. Joining the cast are:
- Makoto Furukawa as Ei Gyomei
- Yuichiro Umehara as Shin-u
- Hana Hishikawa as Lee Lee
- Farahnaz Nikray as Ko Tosetsu
Mitsue Yamazaki is directing the anime at studio Doga Kobo. Yoshiko Nakamura is in charge of the series composition while Ai Kikuchi is illustrating character designs. Manaka Iwami voices Kou Reirin and Natsumi Kawaida plays the role of Shu Keigetsu.
The anime is based on a light novel series by Satsuki Nakamura. It was first published online on the Shosetsuka ni Naro website in July 2020. Ichijinsha released the print edition featuring illustrations by YukiKana in December 2020. Around the same time, a manga adaptation illustrated by Ei Ohitsuji began serialization in Monthly Comic Zero Sum.
Seven Seas Entertainment licensed both the light novel and manga in English, describing the story for the former:
In the Kingdom of Ei, five clans put forth their maidens as imperial consorts—but only one will be crowned empress. Just when frail and beautiful “court butterfly” Kou Reirin seems poised to marry the crown prince, jealous “court rat” Shu Keigetsu steals her body! Reirin wakes up in the dungeons as the conspirator, and things look dire…or do they? Now that she’s got a robust new body, not even the looming threat of execution can stop her!
