Toei Animation has announced that it is joining forces with Studio La Cachette, an animation studio based in Paris, and ADN, the French streaming and distribution company, to co-produce Le Collège Noir animated series. The series will adapt the novel by Ulysse Malassagne, known for his work in Primal (2019) and Love, Death, & Robots (2019). Malassagne, who also co-founded Studio La Cachette, will be directing the animated series. The premiere date has been set for this fall.
According to Toei, the company is trying to expand the market for anime in Europe, specifically France. France already has a strong market for manga and comic books, thanks to the strong publishing industry and campaigns aimed at promoting literacy among teens and the general population.
The official project page for Le College Noir describes the series’ plot as:
In a small boarding school lost in the middle of the Cantal mountains, five teenagers spend the Autumn holidays with their jaded supervisor, Lena. But when they accidentally get cursed by a terrible witch, all hell breaks loose and the terrifying creatures of French folklore come after them…
ADN (Animation Digital Network) will be distributing the series. Toei Animation has acquired some video sales and commercialization rights for this work and will be promoting it. Studio La Cachette is known for its work in the second volume of Star Wars: Visions, Mehdi – Delivery Notice, Mu Yi, and Love, Deaths & Robots, more specifically in the episode “Sucker of Souls”.
Toei Animation, which was founded in 1948, is known for producing numerous series such as Sally the Witch, GeGeGe no Kitaro, Mazinger Z, Galaxy Express 999, Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, Slam Dunk, Digimon, One Piece, Toriko, World Trigger, and the Pretty Cure series.
