Tsukihime Dethrones Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Metacritic

The release of Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- has been cause enough for celebration amongst visual novel readers, but now TYPE-MOON’s vampiric fantasy has sunk its teeth into another victim, leaping up to the very top of the OpenCritic and Metacritic review boards.

At the time of writing, Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- has a rating of 93 on review aggregator Metacritic, which places it a point ahead of this year’s other remake phenomenon, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Both titles are tied for 93 over on OpenCritic, which is still an incredible feat nonetheless, especially considering the vast differences in audience and marketing.

We reviewed Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- earlier this month, and called it “a masterclass in storytelling and visual design.” The game serves as the first half of the Tsukihime Remake project, containing the Arcueid and Ciel routes from the original 2000 visual novel, which has been entirely rewritten by series creator Kinoko Nasu, with new visuals and characters by TYPE-MOON’s legendary designer, Takahashi Takeuchi.

We reviewed Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- on Nintendo Switch, where we thought the game felt “like the definitive way to enjoy the story” — and using Metacritic as a guide, Tsukihime leads the Switch releases for 2024 by a country mile, placing it well ahead of other acclaimed titles this year such as indie sensation Balatro and strategy RPG Unicorn Overlord.

Overall, the expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree remains top dog on the review boards, sitting pretty at 95 for its PS5 release on Metacritic, although its status as DLC makes it ineligible for OpenCritic’s 2024 hall of fame.

If you’re an avid fan of the interconnected “Nasuverse,” then 2024 might still have more left to offer you, with the remaster of Fate/stay night still on the cards—and if Tsukihime -A piece of blue glass moon- is anything to go by, we’re confident that TYPE-MOON will be stirring up the review boards again!
