VIZ Media Announces Anime Co-Production of Hirayasumi Manga 

Viz Media announced today its co-production of an anime adaptation of critically-acclaimed manga series Hirayasumi in collaboration with Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions Co., Ltd. The manga is written and illustrated by Keigo Shinzo, who is also known for authoring Tokyo Alien Bros. The creator has created multiple award-winning works since debuting as a mangaka in 2008 with Nankin.

Hirayasumi in particular is quite decorated, winning grand prize and the 2021 Kagayake! Bros Comic Awards, grand prize at the 27th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, and best ongoing comic at Lucca Comics & Games 2024 in Italy.

Animation for the adaptation will be handled by Production +h., the studio behind impressive projects including The Orbital Children and Dead Dead Demon’s Dededede Destruction. In addition to the anime announcement, a live-action adaptation of Hirayasumi has been announced. An illustration was shared along with the announcement, which you can check out below:

Keigo Shinzo commented on the announcement, saying “I’m so happy to hear it’s being adapted into an anime and a drama! I’m really looking forward to seeing both shows!”

Hirayasumi was originally serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits in April 2021, making its English-language debut through VIZ in May 2024 and quickly and earning widespread acclaim for its artwork and slice-of-life storytelling. As of the announcement, the manga has over 1.1 million copies in circulation worldwide and six volumes currently published by VIZ.

At 29 years old, carefree Hiroto Ikuta doesn’t have a girlfriend, a full-time job, or a plan for the future—and he couldn’t be happier. Hiroto’s breezy attitude isn’t easy for everyone to understand, though. In a world filled with anxiety, confusion, and grief, Hiroto and the people around him are all just doing their best to figure out this thing called life.
