WIT Studio has teased its upcoming original sci-fi anime called Moonrise during the Netflix Geeked Week 2022. As part of the teaser announcement, a key visual for the anime project has been released. Tow Ubukata is part of the project, which was announced in 2018. A novel by Ubukata titled Moonrise is currently available and serves as a prologue to the series.
Masashi Koizuka, who has directed the second and third season of Attack on Titan, will direct the new anime project. There is no other available information at the time.
WIT Studio president and CEO, George Wada, describes the concept of Moonrise as:
“Moonrise” takes place in the near future and will be set in both the Moon and on Earth. WIT STUDIO will join forces with Mr. Ubukata, who is known for the popular series of “Mardock Scramble” (Winner of the Nihon SF Taisho Award) and the historical novel “The Universe Revealed” (Winner of the Booksellers Award).
“Moonrise” will portray the lives of two men, Jack and Al, as they confront various hardships in the vast world of outer space. All action and scenery in the unexplored parts of the Moon will be illustrated using an innovative type of animation unlike any seen before. My sincere wish is that this project inspires contemporary lives everywhere.
In 2022 alone, WIT Studio has worked on a number of anime titles including Ranking of Kings (which began in 2021) and more recently the ongoing Spy x Family anime adaptation (done in collaboration with Cloverworks). Last month, an original anime titled Vampire in the Garden premiered on Netflix, less than 4 weeks after another original work – a movie titled Bubble (also a Netflix exclusive). The studio is also celebrating its 10th year anniversary, with an exhibition titled “Aim Higher.”
