2.5 Dimensional Seduction episode 7 aired on Friday, August 16th, digging deeper into the familiar face of the new teacher at Ririsa’s school. In episode 5, we learned about Ririsa’s childhood and how her mother scolded her for liking manga. Shame continues to be explored throughout 2.5 Dimensional Seduction as we dive into Ms. Hanyu’s secret cosplay past.
“We Need an Advisor!”
Masamune and Ririsa have been using the manga club room for cosplay photography purposes. However, the school’s student body council has asked Masamune to be evicted from the room due to not running a club in cooperation with school rules. Masamune scrambles to find an available teacher to advise the manga club so that he can continue to use the room and desperately asks the new teacher, Ms. Hanyu, if she’d be willing to help him out.
Masamune quickly recognizes Ms. Hanyu as “Mayuri,” an extremely popular cosplayer who has rumors flying around about her cosplay retirement. Mayuri pulls Masamune into an empty room, threatening him to not spill her big secret. Masamune uses this opportunity to blackmail his teacher into being the manga club advisor. Soon after this, we learn a little bit as to why Mayuri moved on from cosplay and became a teacher.
Mayuri is flattered by Ririsa’s admiration of her, but the praise is seemingly not enough to keep her out of cosplay retirement. The most important scene of 2.5 Dimensional Seduction episode 7 is the phone call between Mayuri and her friend, Eri, who is also a cosplayer. Eri questions Mayuri on her choice to retire from cosplay. The new teacher seems conflicted about her decision but also desires to move on and just live her life in her career, completely letting go of cosplay. Mayuri says to Eri “Why did I choose a hobby that brings me so much shame?”. While we don’t yet know the details, I wonder if something happened to Mayuri that led her to be so ashamed of cosplay that she quit.
Since we already know that Ririsa was shamed for liking manga as a child, I feel that she and Mayuri will be able to relate to each other, and hopefully, Ririsa will convince Mayuri to return to cosplay despite what others may think. 2.5 Dimensional Seduction has 17 episodes left, so we’re still only at the beginning. Next week, maybe we’ll get more details about why Mayuri truly quit cosplay, and how will she continue to hide her hobbies and keep them separate from her career.
