The Ghost in The Shell franchise is set to have a new TV anime series which will be produced and animated by Science SARU, as announced with a video.. The new series will be broadcast in 2026.
The Ghost in the Shell franchise originated from a manga series by Masamune Shirow. The original manga series was serialized by Kodansha in the Young Magazine KC imprint from 1989 to 1991. It sprang manga sequels which included Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor (1991-1996), and Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface (1997). A recent sequel to the 1.5 manga series titled The Human Algorithm, written by Junichi Fujisaku, has been serialized by Kodansha since 2019.
The first anime adaptation of the series was the iconic 1995 Ghost in the Shell film, directed by Mamoru Oshii and animated by Production I.G. It was followed by the Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence anime film, released in 2004.
The first TV anime series adaptation was Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, also animated by Production I.G. under the direction of Kenji Kamiyama. The first season aired from October 2002 to October 2003 while the second one aired from January 2004 to January 2005. SAC also got a movie, titled Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – Solid State Society in 2006.
The franchise returned to the screen with Ghost in the Shell: Arise in 2013. The next installment, Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie in 2015, was set after the events of Arise. Netflix has been streaming the new SAC anime, Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045.
Aside from manga and anime adaptations, Ghost in the Shell also had several video game adaptations, as well as a Hollywood remake in 2017, directed by Rupert Sanders and William Wheeler as scriptwriter.
