BLADE & BASTARD, the novel by Goblin Slayer author Kumo Kagyu and Overlord illustrator So-Bin, is getting an anime adaptation. The full title is Blade & Bastard: Warm ash, Dusky dungeon, and it began serialization on December 9, 2022. You can watch the announcement trailer below.
You can also check out the first teaser visual for the anime below.
They also introduced the characters for the BLADE & BASTARD anime:
Iarumas: An amnesiac adventurer. Retrieves the bodies of fallen adventurers from the dungeon at the request of the temple.
Garbage: An adventurer rescued by Iarumas. The “Monster’s leftovers,” who speaks more like a dog than a person.
Raraja: Rookie thief. A strange turn of fate leads him to exploring the dungeon with Iarumas and the others.
Ainikki: An elven woman of the cloth in the service of GOD. Looks out for Iarumas and Garbage.
Berkanan: A young mage from the east who’s just starting out. She has an exceptionally large body.
Orlaya: A rhea girl from Raraja’s former clan.
Sezmar: A fighter who leads the ultimate party. This jovial man is also friends with Iarumas.
The Japanese company Drecom Media launched their DRE Novels publishing imprint on October 7, 2022, and Blade & Bastard: Warm ash, Dusky dungeon was one of the first light novels they released. J-Novel Club is releasing it in English, and they describe the story:
Deep in the unexplored reaches of the dungeon, a corpse is discovered—one that shouldn’t exist. After Iarumas is resurrected, his memories of life before death are gone, and he spends his days delving into the dungeon to retrieve the bodies of dead adventurers. Can they be revived as well? Or will God reduce them to piles of ash on the altar?
Either way, Iarumas collects his finder’s fee. And though his skills earn him some grudging respect, he’s also scorned for this cold, utilitarian attitude. The living keep their distance—Iarumas consorts primarily with the dead. That is, until he meets Garbage, a feral young swordswoman who’s the sole survivor of a massacred party. With Garbage by his side, Iarumas ventures deeper, scouring the dungeon for clues to his past, avoiding monsters, traps, and the inevitability of a permanent ashen demise.
The novel revealed a teaser trailer when it first began serialization, which featured the following voice actors:
- Makoto Furukawa as Iarumas
- Tomoro Kusunoki as Garbage
- Saori Hayami as Ainikki
- Daiki Yamashita as Raraja
