The All Japan Magazine and Book Publisher’s and Editor’s Association (AJPEA) revealed its report about the manga publishing industry in Japan in 2020. On Thursday, February 25, it has been revealed that the manga industry has set a new record of earnings – 612.6 billion yen (~ US$5.77 billion). It beats the 2019 earnings which were around 498 billion yen. What’s more, it’s the highest number in the history of the industry. Up until now, 1995 held the record when the manga industry earned 568.4 billion yen.
According to the report, the record was beaten thanks to popular series like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Also, the report states that “COVID-19 fatigue” caused a possible rise in popularity of isekai series. It’s the first time that the print manga market rose since 2014 as it earned around 13% more than in 2019. What’s more, the digital market continues to rise as it made around 32% more than last year.
We are extremely happy to see those numbers rising! Manga industry earning 612.6 billion yen is a huge thing after all! Hopefully, this will result in more anime adaptations of popular manga series!
