Nintendo has officially announced their new console, the Nintendo Switch 2, with a first look trailer and 2025 release date. It has been confirmed to support games from the original console.

More details will be revealed on April 2 at the “Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – 2025.4.2.” The trailer shows the console with a new Mario Kart playing. You can watch the announcement video below.

There will also be a special event to experience the Switch successor at special events in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas. Ticket registrations will be free and open on January 17 at 12 p.m. PT / 2 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. ET. You can see the exact timings for the US below, with more information available on the official website.

  • New York: April 4 – April 6
  • Los Angeles: April 11 – April 13
  • Dallas: April 25 – April 27

The original Nintendo Switch was officially released on March 3, 2017 as a hybrid gaming console that functions as both a home console and a portable device. It launched with several titles, with the most notable one being The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

As of September 30, 2024, the Nintendo Switch had achieved the following sales:

  • Hardware Sales: 146.04 million units
  • Software Sales: 1,306.10 million units

This placed the Switch as Nintendo’s best-selling home console and the third-best-selling game console of all time, behind the PS2 and Nintendo DS.

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 64.27 million units
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 46.45 million units
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 35.14 million units

  • Super Mario Odyssey – 28.50 million units
