Comments From WIND BREAKER Live-Action Author and Main Cast

Satoru Nii (Original Author)

I was very grateful when the offer for a live-action film came.
I was involved from the script stage, and also had the opportunity to visit the filming set.
I was overwhelmed by the passion of the cast and crew.
The action scenes were powerful and impressive, but what struck me most was how each cast member thoughtfully interpreted their characters—like Sakura and Umemiya—and put great care into their performances.
Watching the filming, I also realized there are many things that only film can express, and it made me even more excited for the final product.
I’m really happy to be able to share the anticipation with everyone about how Sakura and the others will come alive on the big screen.
Thank you so much for your support!

Koshi Mizukami (Haruka Sakura)

Hello, I’m Koshi Mizukami, playing Haruka Sakura.
Normally in this kind of space, I should say something to inspire your interest in the film, or explain why I took on the role.
But while writing this, I keep thinking of the old-school directors who used to say, “Everything I want to say is in the movie.”
So, I’ll stop rambling here.
This is a delinquent film, but one made for the Reiwa era.
Delinquent movies from my own youth had a different vibe and meaning, and I feel the times have definitely changed.
Feeling a bit nostalgic, yet moving toward something new, I charged ahead every day with Sakura and the team through intense filming—days I’ll never forget.
Stay tuned for more updates… and maybe more of my rambling.

Taisei Kido (Akihiko Nirei)

When I read the original manga, I felt like I was seeing a new kind of delinquent character.
The way they fight with the goal of protecting their town and the people in it—every line they spoke moved me deeply.
So when I learned I’d be playing Akihiko Nirei in the live-action version of WIND BREAKER, I was genuinely thrilled.
Of course, the thrilling action scenes are a highlight, but so are the heartfelt conversations between the characters.
I hope everyone experiences the full charm of WIND BREAKER on the big screen!

Keito Tsuna (Hayato Suo)

I’m Keito Tsuna, playing Hayato Suo.
I’ve loved the original manga and especially the character Suo, so I was overjoyed when I was cast.
Because I love the character so much, I didn’t want to just do an imitation.
I wanted to portray something that only I could bring to the role, something that gave meaning to me playing Suo.
Whenever I was unsure, Director Hagiwara was always sincere and supportive, and I was saved by that countless times.
I truly enjoyed creating this film with such a passionate team.
Watching everyone embody their roles on set was such a thrill.
Wind Breaker was made by an incredible cast and crew. I hope it can warm your heart this winter.
And after watching it, I hope you don’t feel like fighting—but rather, feel like throwing your arm around a friend’s shoulder.
Please look forward to WIND BREAKER!

JUNON From BE:FIRST (Kyotaro Sugishita)

I’m JUNON from BE:FIRST, and I play Kyotaro Sugishita.
I was already familiar with WIND BREAKER, so I was shocked and thrilled when I got the offer.
Sugishita is a silent and seemingly violent character who’s fiercely loyal to the leader—but also has a bit of a comedic edge.
It was hard to figure out how to portray that in a live-action format.
Since this was my first acting role in film, I was nervous and full of anxiety at first.
But through the filming process, I learned so much from the cast and how they approached their roles.
It was a very warm and supportive set, and I’m grateful to have been part of it.
I hope many people come to love this film as much as I do.

Motoki Nakazawa (Toma Hiiragi)

Toma Hiiragi may look intimidating, but he has one of the kindest hearts and always acts for others.
I approached the role by imagining him as a “mom-like” figure for the younger students, fitting his position as an upperclassman.
He gets tossed around by all the colorful Bofurin members, but he keeps pushing forward—sometimes with stomach medicine in hand.
I hope you’ll cheer him on.
The film is packed with emotional subtleties and cinematic beauty only a live-action can offer, along with intense action scenes.
I hope you can immerse yourself in the world of WIND BREAKER.
And since we filmed entirely on location in Okinawa, it was a project built with lots of communication among the cast and crew.
Please look forward to it!

Shuhei Uesugi (Hajime Umemiya)

Before filming began, Director Hagiwara and I had a conversation:
“Let’s not glorify fighting or stir up violence—we want people to leave the theater wanting to protect someone close to them.”
That idea guided me throughout the shoot.
Umemiya’s strength lies in his ability to accept others and try to understand them—
though that could be seen as selfish by some, I believe.
What helped me stay true to that was the incredible energy I received from the rest of the cast.
With the best cast, crew, and setting, I believe we created a work that truly matters—something only humans acting live can convey.
Please watch it.
(Every single scene filmed in that storm was brutal!)

Background

Satoru Nii writes and illustrates the WIND BREAKER manga series, which has been serialized on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket website since January 2021. Kodansha USA licensed the manga in English, while Crunchyroll is streaming the anime. Studio CloverWorks handled the animation for both seasons of the anime so far.

The story follows Haruka Sakura, a first-year student at Furin High School, a school notorious for being the place of delinquents who use brute strength to solve everything. However, he instead found Bofurin, a group which actually works to protect the town from actual bad guys. Now Haruka has to learn what it’s like to have people who genuinely care for him, which leads to him also growing a lot stronger along the way.
