Editions Kana, the official French publisher of the Kagurabachi manga, teased that more information on a Kagurabachi anime would come “very soon” in a post to X (formerly Twitter) last month. On June 12, Kana teased its stand at Japan Expo Paris, which features exclusive goods from manga like Crows, Love, That’s an Understatement, Samurai Deeper Kyo, and Kagurabachi, following this up with:
More information on the Kagurabachi anime very soon ! (Plus d’infos très prochainement sure l’animation Kagurabachi !)

UPDATE: Kana has since denied that “l’animation Kagurabachi” refers to “the animeKagurabachi in a new post to X. Alternate meanings of animation in French include the liveliness or activity of something, such as a Kagurabachi event or activation.

The wording of Kana’s post makes it unclear whether this announcement will be at Japan Expo Paris, which runs from July 3 to 6, or is meant more generally. A foreign convention announcing an anime isn’t without precedent. It’s also worth noting that Anime Expo 2025 runs during the same period. Last year, the reputable Japanese newspaper Toyo Keizai reported that CyberAgent and Shochiku would be producing an anime adaptation of the series.

Both companies declined to comment. The two companies have a recent history of collaborating; Shochiku distributed COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing this year, which CyberAgent led the production of. Shochiku also distributed the movie FACELESS last year, of which CyberAgent’s consolidated subsidiary BABEL LABEL participated in the production. Cygames Pictures would purportedly be responsible for Kagurabachi‘s animation production.

Takeru Hokazono writes and illustrates Kagurabachi, first serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in September 2023. The series has over 2.2 million copies in circulation as of April 2025. VIZ made the series one of its fastest English-language print licenses, announcing its acquisition in March 2024, just a month after Volume 1 dropped in Japan. VIZ describes Volume 1:

As a young boy, Chihiro trains every day under his father to become a swordsmith. Although different in temperament, the two spend peaceful days laughing and working together. But one day, tragedy strikes… Now Chihiro burns with hatred and sets out to exact revenge. Following clues left behind by a ruthless yakuza organization, Chihiro confronts the Hishaku, a deadly group of sorcerers that may be behind his father’s murder!
