“While thrilled with the response, I personally don’t feel like the series is known by everyone at this point. Solo Leveling isn’t as universally recognized in Japan yet. As a Japanese person living in Japan, the anime is not at the level of Dragon Ball, One Piece, or Naruto. But if season three happens, that’s when I want to truly break that boundary.”
Kaneko has regularly mentioned Dragon Ball in conjunction with Season 3, using the analogy of Goku receiving support and energy from the people worldwide to power his Spirit Bomb (analogous to Season 3’s chances). In a Reddit AMA, he and producer Sota Furuhashi said, “Do you know Dragon Ball’s Genki-dama (Spirit Bomb)? We need your energy! If we’re going to make a Season 3, it’s going to take all the support and energy from the fans. I learned that from Akira Toriyama himself!“
Numerous staff have also chimed in on what seems to be positive prospects for Season 3, especially following the announcement that Solo Leveling was Crunchyroll’s most-streamed anime of all time. In the meantime, the Solo Leveling anime production committee and other stakeholders are expanding the universe in an attempt to reach new fans. Solo Leveling on Ice was recently announced, followed by Netflix’s acquisition of the Solo Leveling live-action and its first cast reveal.
