Clover Press has launched a new Kickstarter campaign to bring Stan Lee’s classic The Amazing Spider-Man newspaper comic strips back into print, collecting stories originally published between 1981 and 1984.
The new release continues Clover Press’ effort to preserve Spider-Man’s newspaper adventures following its previous campaign covering the strip’s earliest years. This latest collection will have four softcover volumes, gathering every daily and Sunday strip from the period in chronological order.
Written by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee, the stories feature artwork from Larry Lieber, Fred Kida, and Floro Dery, whose contributions helped define the strip during the early 1980s. The collected adventures include stories with killer robots, Doctor Doom, the Spider Brigade, and even the fictional “Spidey Jeans” craze. You can see some preview pages from the 1982 edition below:
Clover Press publisher Hank Kanalz commented on the new release:
“By the early 1980s, Spider-Man was firmly established on the newspaper page. Following the success of our campaign to collect the first four years of The Amazing Spider-Man Newspaper Comic, we are thrilled to continue the line. The strips from 1981 to 1984 feature a more seasoned wall crawler navigating longer, more intricate storylines that balance action, emotional drama, and classic Peter Parker misfortune. This era paired Stan Lee with a rotating roster of artists, including Larry Lieber, Fred Kida, and Floro Dery, each bringing their own visual style to the daily strip.”
The material was previously restored and collected by The Library of American Comics in hardcover editions that have since become difficult to find. Clover Press’ new editions aim to make the stories more accessible through a more affordable format.
Each volume will measure 11 x 8.5 inches in a horizontal layout that preserves the original newspaper presentation. The campaign’s bundle includes all four volumes housed in a protective slipcase, while additional rewards include lithographs, stickers, a puzzle, and a second pocket-book facsimile edition.
Originally launched in newspapers in 1977, The Amazing Spider-Man comic strip allowed Stan Lee to tell original Spider-Man stories outside the main Marvel Comics continuity, introducing readers to adventures combining superhero action with Peter Parker’s everyday life.
The Kickstarter campaign is available now.
