The anime adapts the light novel series Trapped in a Dating Sim: The World of Otome is Tough for Mobs by Yomu Mishima, whom Anime Corner had the chance to interview in 2023. The series, illustrated by Monda, has been published by Micro Magazine since 2018, with thirteen volumes published as of March 2024.

A manga version illustrated by Jun Shiosato is serialized under Fujimi Shobo’s Dragon Comics Age label, also having thirteen collected volumes. The English release of the light novels is published by Seven Seas Entertainment. Season 2 of the anime continues from roughly Volume 3 of the novels, which are described:
Leon keeps earning accolades and climbing the social ladder–much to his chagrin. Now other nobles view him as a threat, and his political rivals pull out all the stops to lock him up and throw away the key. But that’s just what the Principality of Fanoss wants. With Holfort Kingdom’s greatest power behind bars, the Principality launches an unprecedented attack. Now Leon must figure out how to free himself–and whether his country is even worth saving.

The anime recently revealed the second visual for Season 2 as well:
