Atelier Ryza and Atelier Yumia producer Junzo Hosoi shared that Ryza’s “plump” figure — popular among fans due to her large thighs — was inspired by Japan’s recession. When 4Gamer asked what trends the team was conscious of for the new Atelier Yumia game, Hosoi said, “I decided to use global trends as a guide for the character design of this work. This is just my impression, but I think that the economy is influencing what designs are popular now.
I think that there are characters that are needed in a recession and characters that are accepted in a booming economy. For example, during a recession, you hear about trends like a plump figure and motherhood.“

When asked whether that was why Ryza was born, Hosoi said, “Ryza has that aspect too. I think that such trends are less likely to change the longer the recession lasts. Japan has been said to be in a recession for a long time, so I thought that if we took an approach that matched that, Yumia would end up looking similar to Ryza. So I decided that this work would pursue global trends, not just Japan.“
Aside from Ryza’s thighs, the interview also explores the creative process behind Yumia’s design, navigating the balance between a trendy and a fantasy character. Benitama’s story of how he became responsible for the character design was also revealed, as well as how he pushed for Yumia’s tight skirt despite personally knowing tight outfits should be avoided for 3D games. “So I thought it would be difficult, but I put it in because it’s cute,” he added. Various Yumia concept arts were also displayed.

Koei Tecmo describes the new game:
In a world where alchemy has become taboo and is considered evil, Atelier Yumia: The Alchemist of Memories & the Envisioned Land follows the adventures of Yumia Liessfeldt, and her companions as they seek to uncover the truth behind the fall of the Aladissian Empire, which once thrived with alchemy, and the memories of a lost history.
Yumia’s quest will take her across a ruined continent and despite the uncertainties of confronting her past, she will need to create her own path if she hopes to unravel the mysteries behind the cataclysm that destroyed Aladiss.
