Atsushi Ohkubo Called the Gachiakuta Creator His 'Legitimate Successor'

With GACHIAKUTA officially getting an anime adaptation, it’s a good time to remember that its creator Kei Urana was praised by the Fire Force and Soul Eater creator Atsushi Ohkubo, who called the mangaka his rightful successor and one that would surpass him. GACHIAKUTA began serialization in February 2022, which is when Atsushi Ohkubo commented the following:
At Weekly Shonen Magazine, the new series by Kei Urana has started! This is someone who loved Soul Eater since they were a child! Urana is my legitimate successor who has already surpassed me!! If you like my manga, you should definitely like this one too! Check it out! It’s seriously cool! I’m already defeated! Amazing! Cheers!

The inspiration is clear in the work itself, while Atsushi Ohkubo certainly has the credibility to say something like this due to the fact Kei Urana worked as his assistant while Fire Force was being serialized in the same magazine. The successor part was also quite fitting as the Fire Force manga ended only a week after GACHIAKUTA began, almost signifying the passing of the crazy badass shonen torch within the magazine.

Since then, the GACHIAKUTA manga has released 102 chapters. It got an English release by Kodansha USA in January 2024. The official synopsis:
Rudo lives in the slums of a floating town, where the poor scrape by under the shadow of the rich who live a sumptuous life, simply casting their garbage off the side, into the abyss. Then one day, he’s falsely accused of murder, and his wrongful conviction leads to an unimaginable punishment—exile off the edge, with the rest of the trash. Down on the surface, the cast-off waste of humanity has bred vicious monsters, and if Rudo wants to have any hope of discovering the truth and seeking vengeance against those who cast him into Hell, he will have to master a new power and join a group known as the Cleaners who battle the hulking trash beasts of the Pit!

Fire Force also has a 3rd TV anime season in production, while Soul Eater is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
