Comments from Attack on Titan manga creator Hajime Isayama at the Attack on Titan: THE LAST ATTACK revival screenings launch event on January 9 revealed insight into his current working situation. He shared that he is no longer drawing on a daily basis, having “poured everything out” following the series’ lengthy 11.5-year serialization. His comments are below:
“Many years have passed since the manga serialization and anime broadcast ended, but I’m currently not working. I’ve occasionally been asked to draw illustrations and sign autographs, and I’ve helped out with Kaji-san’s Soyogi Project, but I haven’t been drawing on a daily basis.“
He continued, “However, I am by no means living a self-indulgent life; I am busy every day. Please believe me on that. My daily life is far from the NEET life I dreamed of during serialization. However, even if I weren’t so busy now, I couldn’t write anything like Attack on Titan. If I try to write something, it would end up being a cut-out of one of the elements I drew in Attack on Titan. Pouring everything out until I was completely empty… I think my debut serialization was something like that.“
Kaji also shared that Isayama was doing well in a private visit last year. They’ve been working together on a manga adaptation of Kaji’s Soyogi Fractal project, which commemorates Kaji’s 20th anniversary in the industry. It debuted on January 9 in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine. Isayama was credited for the original manga drafts and co-wrote the story with Kaji, while Kai Noshigami is credited as the artist.
Kodansha USA licensed Attack on Titan in English, describing the 35-volume series:
A century ago, the grotesque giants known as Titans appeared and consumed all but a few thousand humans. The survivors took refuge behind giant walls. Today, the threat of the Titans is a distant memory, and a boy named Eren yearns to explore the world beyond Wall Maria. But what began as a childish dream will become an all-too-real nightmare when the Titans return and humanity is once again on the brink of extinction…
