The editorial department of Hakusensha’s Young Animal has announced today, May 20, the unfortunate passing of Berserk author Kentarou Miura. The icon died last May 6 at the age of 54 due to acute aortic dissection.
According to medical studies, acute aortic dissection is an uncommon disease affecting the aorta, the largest artery in the body. While it is uncommon, complications develop rapidly and the outcome is often fatal.
Miura started his professional manga career with “Futatabi…” (Once More…) published in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine in 1985. Afterward, he went to Hakusensha to publish his one-shot version of the Berserk manga in its Monthly Comicomi magazine in 1988. He followed it with the full version of the Berserk manga series published in Monthly Animal House magazine in 1989, which continued in Young Animal magazine until now.
Young Animal kept serializing the manga series from 1992 until the present date. With 40 published volumes and more than 300 chapters, the Berserk manga has 40 million copies in circulation. Additionally, the 40th volume was published way back in September 2018.
Fans from all throughout the world expressed shock over the tragic news.
He will be dearly missed. His works and successes will never leave our hearts, even though he has moved on to a new life. We sincerely hope that his family will be able to find peace at this time.
