An uncut version of the Birth of Kitaro: The Mystery of GeGeGe (Kitarou Tanjou: Gegege no Nazo) will be released in Japanese theatres on October 4. The new version of the movie “reflects production staff’s original vision” and will include 327 cut retakes and re-recorded audio. The original version of the film premiered on November 17, 2023, and was rated PG12, while the new one will have a higher age rating of R15.
Toei Animation animated the film under the direction of Gou Koga. Hiroyuki Yoshino wrote the screenplay, while Toko Yatabe did the character designs. Meanwhile, Mai Ichioka served as the art director, Tomoyuki Ishiyama as the photography director, Sayoko Yokoyama as color designer, and Kenji Kawai composed the music. The cast for the anime movie included:

The Kitarou Tanjou: Gegege no Nazo anime movie covered the events of the 2018 GeGeGe no Kitaro anime series, which aired for 97 episodes from April 2018 to March 2022. Crunchyroll is streaming the series, describing it as:

Shigeru Mizuki is the creator of the supernatural and horror comic manga series GeGeGe no Kitaro. From 1960 till 1969, it was serialized in Kodansha’s Shonen Magazine Comics. From 1968 till 2018, varioud anime adaptations were produced: Toei Animation animated them all, and they were broadcast on Fuji Television.
