Black Butler Manga Goes on Hiatus to Prepare for the Finale

Black Butler manga will be going on hiatus starting with next month’s (August) issue of Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy magazine. The hiatus will “last for a while” and during this time old chapters will be republished. The magazine issued Yana Toboso’s statement with a new illustration:

Thank you very much for always supporting Black Butler! We have decided to take a slightly longer hiatus. I debuted in 2004, so this year will mark 20 years of drawing. The reason I was able to continue for so long without any serious illnesses was due to everyone’s warm support.
During this period, I will prepare mentally and physically to proceed with the necessary interviews and preparations for the climax of the Black Butler manga. I apologize to everyone who was looking forward to the series. Will will be back in the best condition!

Editorial department of the magazine promised to announce the return of the Black Butler manga from hiatus as soon as it is ready. Mangaka Yana Yoboso also posted on her official account, saying that she would be going for a full medical checkup but also to the UK for interviews.

Toboso has been working on the Black Butler manga since October 2006. Currently, the series has over 35 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga of all time. It received a successful anime adaptation. A-1 Pictures animated the first two seasons, and although the second season diverts from the manga, the sequel, Book of Circus, returns to the source material. Book of Circus was followed by Book of Murder OVA and Book of the Atlantic movie. A new season of the TV anime, which covers the Public School arc, is currently airing. CloverWorks is animating it.

Yen Press licensed the manga and described the plot of the first volume as:
Just a stone’s throw from London lies the manor house of the illustrious Phantomhive earldom, its master one Ciel Phantomhive. Earl Phantomhive is a giant in the world of commerce, Queen Victoria’s faithful servant . . . and a slip of a twelve-year old boy. Fortunately, his loyal butler, Sebastian, is ever at his side, ready to carry out the young master’s wishes. And whether Sebastian is called to save a dinner party gone awry or probe the dark secrets of London’s underbelly, there is practically nothing Sebastian cannot do. In fact, one might even say Sebastian is too good to be true . . . or at least, he is too good to be human . . .
