The long-running novel series BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense (Itai no wa Iya nano de Bogyoryoku ni Kyokufuri Shitai to Omoimasu) has officially come to an end. The series, which began as a web novel on Shosetsuka ni Naro in May 2016, posted its final update on February 20, 2025, wrapping up after nearly a decade of serialization.
BOFURI Novel Comes to an End
Written by Yumikan and illustrated by Koin, BOFURI follows Maple, a newbie VRMMO player who invests all her stat points into defense, leading to the unexpected acquisition of Absolute Defense, rendering her nearly invulnerable. Her unconventional build then continues to grant her powerful (overpowered) skills and eventually makes her an unstoppable player. Despite her being straight out broken, she still manages to have fun with her guild in the light-hearted adventure.
The series was later acquired by Fujimi Shobo, which began publishing it in light novel format. The first volume was published in September 2017 under the Kadokawa Books imprint. By August 2024, it had reached 18 volumes, with Volume 19 set to be the final one.
Manga and Anime Adaptations
A manga adaptation, illustrated by Jiro Oimoto, has been serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s Comp Ace magazine since May 2018 and currently has a total of eight volumes. Both the light novel and manga were licensed in English by Yen Press.
The anime adaptation, produced by studio SILVER LINK, aired its first season from January to March 2020, with Season 2 airing from January to April 2023.
BOFURI Author’s Comments on the Conclusion
Following the final chapter, Yumikan shared a message on X (formerly Twitter):
“Bofuri has officially concluded! Thank you so much for all your support! I was able to reach an ending I am fully satisfied with, thanks to everyone’s encouragement. This joyful journey, built upon countless miracles, has been a truly happy one—I hope it has been the same for all of you as well.“
With the 19th and final volume set for release soon, BOFURI’s conclusion marks the end of an era for this fun fantasy-adventure series.
