The opening made waves after being released due to its numerous of movie references including Pulp Fiction, Constantine, and Jacob’s Ladder. The opening also referenced other pieces of media known to the anime community such as Neon Genesis Evangelion (or Naruto, depending on who you ask) and The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. The 100 million views for the Chainsaw Man opening make it the most-viewed of the Fall 2022 season by far. Spy x Family Part 2 comes in second with ‘only’ 18 million views.
Shingo Yamashita has directed and storyboarded many popular openings including the first openings for Jujutsu Kaisen and Urusei Yatsura (2022), the second opening for Ranking of Kings, and more recently, the opening for The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3. Yamashita also recently worked as a key animator on episode 6 of the new popular series Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
In May 2023, MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka stated that Chainsaw Man was a financial success after the studio decided to 100% fund the anime itself rather than being a subcontractor of any production committee. It was announced during Jump Festa 2024 that Chainsaw Man will be releasing a movie at a later date for the Reze arc. The first season of the series is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
Crunchyroll is streaming the anime, and they describe the story:
Denji is a young boy who works as a Devil Hunter with the “Chainsaw Devil” Pochita. One day, as he was living his miserable life trying to pay off the debt he inherited from his parents, he got betrayed and killed. As he was losing his consciousness, he made a deal with Pochita, and got resurrected as the “Chainsaw Man”: the owner of the Devil’s heart.
