City The Animation Episode 8 Review - Love is in the CITY

I came looking for copper but found gold—that’s what I always think after watching City The Animation. However, Episode 8 was special. Not only did we get a full account of every love interest, but we also witnessed the start of a new arc.

Are you ready for a review of even more surreal adventures? Let’s check the best moments of episode 8!

Funny, unrequited romantic feelings

What could be a depressing episode in other anime becomes, in City, a delightful collection of heartbreaks that somehow makes us smile. You can be rejected and still have fun (or at least the audience does).

You were probably surprised by Ms. Tanabe’s crush on the seemingly minor character Tatsuta Adatara, the eldest son of the Adatara family. But if you paid attention to Episode 6’s enormous, crazy sequence, you might have noticed that Ms. Adatara briefly reveals her one-sided love for Tatsuta. What should we expect from this affection? Definitely more of Ms. Adatara turning everyone’s life upside down.

Mr. Officer, Ms. Tanabe’s successor in the police station, follows his predecessor’s footsteps in his own way. Our public servant had a crush on Wako Izumi. Who could blame him? In addition, he resists the “Riko effect”, dodging and deflecting the love arrows mercilessly launched by Riko’s smile. Sadly, trying to win over the unpredictable Wako doesn’t look promising. At least he will keep leaving us with such enjoyable gags.

Interestingly, who may have a chance in love is Tatewaku Makabe. His most commendable trait is his perseverance in pursuing such a difficult love interest as Riko. He has to compete with the entire CITY, but he accomplishes the unthinkable: Riko accepts the theater date!

What you may have missed is all the storytelling behind the date. Since the first episodes, the Tekaridake Troupe has been posting their ads at Makabe’s restaurant. In exchange, Tekaridake gives Makabe two tickets for the upcoming show. As I always say, don’t miss the details in City!

And we close this list with an unexpected character: Ecchan. All this time, her first crush has been Tatewaku, her best friend’s older brother. She was shocked after Riko agreed to go on a date with him—who wouldn’t be? In a way, her reaction is the big lesson from this episode: it’s ok to cry for a broken heart, yet don’t forget to move forward.

Maybe Ecchan moved forward too fast (the next morning), but you get the idea.

And the trophy for best sequence is for…

Tekaridake troupe. No contest. Jun Fukuyama, voice actor for Tekaridake, takes the lead in episode 8 and echoes the hilarious pacing of City‘s manga. Despite being a guy who normally relates only with animals, Tekaridake’s production is the big event for CITY inhabitants. Its popularity matches its quality and creativity.

As foreshadowed by previous episodes, Nagumo is part of the cast. However, she made hard requirements to accept. So no voice, and no face, which only adds to the uniqueness of the show. Even so, her payment is another story…

Prepare your running shoes

Episode 8 starts with many drones going around CITY carrying a message the audience can’t read. In the final moments, the anime shows that the CITY Race is coming! Stay tuned for the next episode’s review, in which we will cover this mysterious event.
