Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime was officially announced today at Anime Expo 2025, revealing the first poster visual. Voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez) were present at the Anime Expo 2025 panel, alongside the writer/producer Bartosz Sztybor. It was hosted by Joey, also known as TheAnimeMan, with director Hiroyuki Imaishi also making a surprise appearance before the announcement.
We got to interview Bartosz last year, and we spoke with him about the anime, its production, his inspiration, and more. During the panel, he also (jokingly?) commented on the inspiration for the story. “I’m from Poland. People in Poland are sad. They are born sad, they die sad, so I just wanted to make the whole world sad… When people are sad, I’m a bit happy.” The iconic “I Really Want to Stay At Your House” song was also played several times throughout the panel.
A new project was announced as a new collaboration project between Netflix Animation, CDPR and Cyberpunk back in September 2024. It’s unclear whether this is the same project, but Sztybor further commented: “But don’t get too excited. David’s dead.”
When asked about the decision for a sequel, he answered that one answer is that Night City has a lot of stories to tell, and he had a dream that it wouldn’t end with the first anime. There are more stories to tell with many interesting characters. The second answer was “I wasn’t satisfied with the sadness… so I want you to be even more sad now.”
The new anime will be another 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077, described as “a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge”. It will be directed by Kai Ikarashi, who directed Episode 6 of the original anime titled “Girl on Fire.”
“When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?”
CD PROJEKT RED (or CDPR) is the company behind the Cyberpunk 2077 video game. The first anime series was Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which was animated by TRIGGER and had Rafał Jaki as showrunner and executive producer. The franchise also launched a prequel manga focused on Rebecca and Pilar last December.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was released in September 2022 and had a total of 10 episodes. It was voted as the Best New Anime of the year in our yearly awards for that year, as well as the Best Original Anime. Netflix is streaming the show, describing its story:
The series tells a standalone, 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City — a technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future. Having everything to lose, he stays alive by becoming an edgerunner — a mercenary outlaw also known as a cyberpunk.
Michał Nowakowski, Joint-CEO of CDPR together with Adam Badowski, also confirmed that CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS 2 will also be coming to Netflix “in due time.”
