The Detectives These Days are Crazy premiere aired on July 1 on Crunchyroll, and it is a show that you should keep an eye on. It is focused on the extraordinary detective duo Nagumo and Mashiro, where the former is a washed-up veteran who had his hour of glory a long time ago, but eventually lost his edge, while the latter is an enthusiastic high school girl who one day showed up at his office and decided she will be his assistant. It is a setup designed for comedic delivery, and in this first episode, there is plenty of that.

The premiere started with an interesting direction choice, with a one-liner from Mashiro immediately followed by the opening song. This choice is noticeable because it differs from the 30-second to 2-minute introduction time that usually precedes the opening, and even more so for a first episode, where the opening often comes later than usual. But it is a choice that sets the tone for the rest of the episode. It sets the expectation that the comedic punchline can hit you anywhere, anytime, and that indeed happens quite a lot during this premiere.

There are two distinct parts to this first episode. The first part is focused on introducing Nagumo, a burnt-out detective who did not age well, is allergic to using technology, and more generally, did not adapt to the times. His life is disrupted when the young and energetic Mashiro storms his office and demands to work as his assistant. He suffers from back pain, a debuff every adult gets once they are past the age of 30, and he is one of the 3 remaining people on earth who do not yet use a smartphone. Nagumo is definitely a colorful character, and I look forward to seeing what kind of absurd situations he will find himself in.

The second half of the episode is a new detective case, and it is now Mashiro’s time to shine. She comes in like a hurricane, does not take no for an answer, and somehow misunderstands a request to get rid of bugs and accidentally sweeps up the local mafia branch with her fists. She is a menace, and I already love her energy. She brings balance to Nagumo’s character as she seems to excel at things Nagumo sucks at, but she also have her own flaws. And given the comedic nature of the show, both weaknesses and strengths are accentuated to an extreme degree, which makes their interactions funny by design. The first episode flew by quickly thanks to the banter between this comedic duo, and I look forward to seeing more of it!

The Detectives These Days are Crazy premiere showed great energy, and it seems like a worthwhile show to follow for this upcoming summer season, especially if you like comedic and gag shows. As a reminder, it is streaming on Crunchyroll, and the first episode aired on July 1. Crunchyroll describes the plot as:
Once a legendary detective, Nagumo Keiichiro now stumbles through middle age, baffled by smartphones and modern life. His quiet decline gets disrupted when Mashiro, a bold high school girl, bursts into his office demanding to become his apprentice. Though he’s rusty and set in his ways, her relentless enthusiasm drags him back into detective work. Now the gap-bridging detective duo is on the case!
