Detectives These Days Are Crazy Episode 2 Review

Detectives These Days Are Crazy Episode 2 explored two more detective cases in a gag-ridden fashion. The absurdity of the situations Nagumo and Mashiro are getting involved in is getting worse with every case, and the anime keeps on throwing curveballs at you when you don’t expect it. It will be interesting to see if they can keep things fresh as the anime progresses, and how far the absurdity will take them.

One of the aspects I appreciate about this series is the direction and animation. A lot of effort has been spent on augmenting the series’ jokes by timing certain frames with the delivery of the jokes, which adds to the comedic effect. The switch of the animation style at certain moments, to showcase the absurdity of some situations, and showing exaggerated emotions for the characters, is also great and is reminiscent of how Grand Blue Dreaming does it, a master in that style.

I did not expect Detectives These Days Are Crazy to have a supernatural theme after Episode 1, but it seems that everything is fair game as long as they can deliver their gags. The addition of the ghost story shows that the author does not really limit themselves by common sense, and will push the limits of storytelling as far as they can imagine it, while keeping the story grounded in the relationship between Nagumo and Mashiro as the anchor.

Mashiro’s character is endearing to me as she keeps pushing the story to its limits. She is extremely competent, and it keeps contrasting with her decisions, which are beyond comprehension and always lead to absurd consequences, consequences she deals with through brute force. It piques my interest, and I am curious to see how she and her relationship with Nagumo will evolve over the future episodes.

Detectives These Days Are Crazy is now streaming on Crunchyroll, and they describe the plot as:
Once a legendary detective, Nagumo Keiichiro now stumbles through middle age, baffled by smartphones and modern life. His quiet decline gets disrupted when Mashiro, a bold high school girl, bursts into his office demanding to become his apprentice. Though he’s rusty and set in his ways, her relentless enthusiasm drags him back into detective work. Now the gap-bridging detective duo is on the case!
