Toei Animation announced on May 9 that the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie is hitting theaters in 2022. The film will be a new project written by creator Akira Toriyama himself. Toriyama also was head of the character designs for the movie and also contributed to writing lines in the script.
Toriyama released the following statement as part of the announcement detailing his involvement with the film:
This announcement comes after an official leak Friday on the Toei Animation EU website. It showed a news article that was meant for today but was published on May 7. The leak was screen-recorded by @DBSChronicles but was taken down from the website shortly after.
The announcement’s timing is perfecting considering May 9 is also “Goku Day”. Fans will also be able to enjoy episode three of Dragon Ball Heroes, which will be streaming on Youtube.
This is the first Dragon Ball news we’ve heard since “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” came out in theaters in 2018.
Dragon Ball Super now joins the likes of other popular shonen that have announced movies recently such as Black Clover, Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia.
The official release date for the new movie has yet to be confirmed.
