Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Developers Say Players Will Witness A "Chain of Narrative Developments," Share Updates On Release Date and Open World

The team behind the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PS5 title has shared updates on the game’s release date and some key mechanics on Twitter. Story and scenario lead, Kazushige Nojima from Stellavista, has answered a question on Twitter on the third consecutive day of developer commentary about the forthcoming project.

Asked about key things players can look forward to in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Nojima replied that “Players will witness a chain of narrative developments that lie at the very heart of the FINAL FANTASY VII story while discovering each character’s destiny.”

The second part of the three-part remake of the original 1997 RPG is due for release in Winter 2023, with producer Yoshinori Kitase saying that the team is “working on nailing down a release date.”

On Twitter, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth‘s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, fielded a question about the open-world exploration of Gaia, the land in which Final Fantasy VII is set. Hamaguchi answered that “Players will be able to journey across the wide and multifaceted world with a high degree of freedom, experiencing a myriad of different stories along the way.”

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – First Look Trailer

The first game in the trilogy of remakes, Final Fantasy VII Remake, was released on April 10, 2020, with an expanded story and added content to create an experience comparable to a normal standalone title. A PS5-enhanced version, titled Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, was released in June 2021, along with a special episode that followed Yuffie Kisaragi.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will follow the game’s party after they depart Midgar following their confrontation with Sephiroth. The third and final game in the trilogy has not yet been announced, however, in a 2022 interview with Dengeki Online, Final Fantasy VII Remake‘s director, Tetsuya Nomura, teased that the title will follow a similar “Re-” naming structure. Nomura returns to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth as the creative director.

Meanwhile, the latest entry in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy XVI will release on June 22 for PS5. Final Fantasy XVI marks a darker and grimmer shift for the franchise, and you can watch the launch trailer below:
