Girl Meets Rock – Special Illustration to Commemorate Next Manga Award 2024 (Web Category) Win

The author Kuwahali’s comment: “Thank you so much for all the votes!! Girl Meets Rock! was originally a manga drawn by an amateur hobbyist who wasn’t good at drawing, but it has become so widely supported by many readers, and I truly believe that this is thanks to the incredible work of the artist, Ideuchi-sensei! I’m so grateful!! There are still so many things I want to draw, so I hope you’ll continue to follow this manga in the future!!”

The illustrator Tetsuo Ideuchi’s comment: “I’m incredibly happy about winning first place!!! Thank you so much!!! When I first received the offer to handle the art and read the story, I had a strong feeling like ‘it’s so interesting, it’s definitely going to get serialized.’ And now that it has become a series and received so much support from everyone, winning this award is such an honor. The manga is still only on volume two, and Hatono’s story is just beginning, so I hope you’ll keep looking forward to what’s next. I’ll continue to do my best as the artist to bring Kuwahali-san’s story to life for all of you!”

Girl Meets Rock! was followed by RuriDragon by Shindo Masaoki in 2nd place and Vtuber Kusamura Shigemi by sakamegane in 3rd.

The Next Manga Award was established in 2014 by Kadokawa Corporation’s Da Vinci magazine and Niconico. Its purpose is to discover and introduce works predicted to become popular in the future. Previous winners in the Web Category include multiple works that ended up as hits with anime adaptations, such as Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku (2015), My Senpai Is Annoying (2018), SPY × FAMILY (2019), The Dangers in My Heart (2020), and Kaiju No. 8 (2021).

The other category is Print Manga, which was won this year by Kagurabachi by Takeru Hokazono.
